Abstract
[edit | edit source]- The article discusses the history of tartans worn in Scotland and the evolution of the tartan as a symbol of patriotism. Originally the colors of the tartan were subdued and an early worn by those of limited means in the Highlands. There is evidence that from about 1600 on that powerful chiefs desired their men to be dressed in garments of similar pattern. In 1746, an act was passed prohibiting the wearing of tartan in any form, although not completely obeyed.
