Abstract
[edit | edit source]- The article provides a historical perspective of the life of Roxelana, who entered the Seraglio as a slave, and became the wife of Süleyman. Although contemporary accounts and historians have characterized her as ruthless, the two were devoted to each other and Süleyman remained monogamous during their marriage and celibate after her death. The article discusses the practice of devshirmé, slavery in the Ottoman empire, and the rules of the Ottoman power structures within the Sultan's living quarters, Topkapi and the Imperial Harem. The article has seven listed sources for additional reference.
