Abstract

[edit | edit source]
  • The author provides a wider context for the events that take place in DD's works conceding that the article: "...has no direct connection to Dorothy Dunnett's books but as it touches Dunnett-related topics like Barbary pirates and Iceland and even the Knights of Malta get a honorary mention I thought you might perhaps find it interesting."
  • She details three Viking raids on Iceland and Cork in Ireland that resulted in almost many inhabitants being captured and sold into slavery in Algiers.

Historical Events

[edit | edit source]
  • In 1627, a pirate fleet consisting of only three ships attacked three places in southern Iceland: some spot on the Eastern coast, the Grindavik region and the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands). On the islands they killed 36 people and abducted 242; all in all about 400 people were captured and brought to Algiers to be sold as slaves.
