Abstract
[edit | edit source]- Dunnett crafted a story in which Lymond would be forced to face devastating forces in all three of these categories: fate, man and self. While some authors might provide a protective wing for their hero, Dunnett knew Lymond could take it and thrust him further into life's ruthless areas. Dunnett understood the powerful forces that shape the human condition, the power of human connections, of love and deceit and loyalty and betrayal. As Lymond is pushed to his breaking point and fighting to survive, both physically and emotionally, Dunnett presents a human fighting to make their way through the hardships of life's many challenges and escape the machinations of Fate. The article considers the brotherly but tense relationship between Lymond and Richard; the would-be friendship of Jerrott; the non-judgmental care by Archie; the meeting of the mind with Richard Chancellor and the gravitational pull of Phillipa.
