[edit | edit source]Jean le Maçon de Launay, sieur de La Rivière, called Jean Ripaire (Riparius, Riverius), was born 1533 at Angers. He was elected first pastor of the Protestant church of Paris on the occasion of a baptism:
In 1555, the family de La Ferrière refused to have their new-born baptised by a Catholic priest. The father then asked the Protestant community, which gathered clandestinely in house no. 4, rue des Marais-Saint-Germain (today rue Visconti) to assign elders in order to elect from among them a minister of the Word of the Lord (ministre de la Parole de Dieu). In September 1555 the elders chose Le Maçon, then a 22 year old student of the law, who had come from Geneva and Lausanne, to become the first pastor of Paris and thus be able to baptise the child.<ref>http://www.huguenots.fr/2010/09/le-premier-synode-national-protestant-reuni-a-paris-en-1559/</ref>
He went back to Geneva in 1558, returned to Paris and stayed until 1562. He died a martyr at Angers in 1572.<ref> Bulletin de la Société de l'histoire du protestantisme français, 1853. Vol 12, p. 10 read online (in French)</ref>
