Overview and Issue

[edit | edit source]
  • Article on what a young Dorothy Dunnett might have read.

Abstract

[edit | edit source]
  • Dunnett readers have heard that when she complained that she had run out of historical novels to read, her husband suggested that she write her own. The author looks back to the literary works available up to 1961 when Game of Kings was published. In addition to standard classics from Sir Walter Scott, Charles Dickens, the author suggests Dunnett read works by RL Stevenson, Charles Reade, Alexander Dumas, Baroness Orczy, Zoé Oldenbourg and Sigrid Undset to name just a few. It is assumed that Dunnett's reading would works with both imaginative as well as strictly historical sources.
