Abstract

[edit | edit source]
  • The author explores The Lymond Chronicles and House of Niccolò to discover how Dunnett differs in her uses of epic machinery, and this refers to beings who intervene in the action to affect the fates of the individual characters. Tolkien gave the epic machinery role to eagles, the message being that human affairs are controlled by the will of a grater power. In contrast, Dunnett's heroes prefer to believe they are in control of their destiny, but epic machinery similar to Tolkien's can be found in the use of divining and parrots. The article considers examples in both series.
