Abstract

[edit | edit source]
  • Alexei Adashev was the son of a boyar who rose to become one of the principle advisors to Ivan IV. He served on Ivan's council along with the priest Sylvester. Between them, they helped Ivan rule and for a time were able to tone down some of his more extreme measures. He began to lose his influence over Ivan in 1553 when Ivan fell ill and demanded that all swear allegiance to both his wife and his son, Dimitri. Adashev complied but his father refused. Adashev was later blamed for the failure of the war in Livonia and was eventually arrested and imprisoned. He died of prison fever in the fortress of Dorport.
