Abstract

• The article examines the role of Venice beginning in NR, and how Dunnett changed the story arc to give the city more and more prominence in the series. The authors posit that Venice is another adversarial double of Nicholas comparable to other characters such as Fat Father Jordan, de'Acciajuoli, Violante, Gelis and Ludovico da Bologna. Just as Bruges influenced Nicholas's early life, the final chapter of NR foreshadows the role of Venice in Nicholas's life as a manipulator of events, with its own goals and interests. As the series unfolds, the glory of Venice fades; and as Nicholas begins his drawn-out redemption, the city recedes in importance.
