==Overview and Issue== * Article on the ancient custom of sanctuary. * [[WG142]] ==Abstract== * This article discusses the ancient custom of seeking a place of safety and hoping for justice, and how the different approaches to sanctuary prompted Lymond to seek safety and justice in Flaw Valleys and not Scotland in both GofK and DK. The concept in England goes back to the 7th Century and later, under Alfred the Great, was adopted in English Law. Although William the Conqueror further reshaped the law narrowing the options for fugitives, the author believes Dorothy Dunnett chose Flaw Valleys as a safe place for Lymond in the tradition of searching for sanctuary in the widest sense. Sanctuary in Scotland involved the Knights Templar and the Knights of St John. Torphichen Preceptory was the Scottish headquarters for the Knights of Saint John and was always a place of sanctuary. As Graham Malett was on the verge of taking over this sanctuary, it was impossible for Lymond to seek safety there. ==Author== [[Sheila Harper]] ==Dunnett Chapter References== * ==Historical Characters== * Alfred the Great * William the Conqueror * Knights Templar * [[Knights of St John]] * [[Henry VIII]] ==Fictional Characters== * [[Lymond]] * [[Graham Reid Malett]] * [[Philippa Somerville]] * [[Kate Somerville]] * [[Gideon Somerville]] * [[Christian Stewart]] * [[Kuzúm]] ==Locations== * [[Hexham]] * [[Torphichen]] * [[Durham]] ==Literature== *(none) ==Illustrations== * (none) ==Historical Events== * (none) ==Other References]== * (none) ==Quotes from Dunnett== *(none) ==References== [[Category:WG Articles]]
