==Overview and Issues==
Dorothy Dunnett's personal notes on the character she envisaged for Julius.

==Abstract==
DD sets out the family background of the character of Julius including the history of the Liddell Family in Scotland, and how Julius, a fictional character, could be a member of this family. Julius is ambitious and clever but he knows that his path to success will be by analysing and exploiting other men's weaknesses. The character notes describe Julius's growing awareness of the relationship between him and Claes; Julius's resentment and jealousy of Claes's intelligence, complex planning, friendships; and the powerful world open to Claes to which Julius longs to a part. Note: Later DD noted that much of her character notes on Julius were later altered, and the article includes several footnotes detailing these changes.
