==The Index Page== Each issue will have its own Index page identifying publication information, a list of each article and other content. ===Creating an Index Page=== It's critical to not create duplicate issue pages, so always start in the search field. * To create a new page, enter in the exact issue number in the Search field: WG040. Be sure to use the three-digit number as shown and not "WG40". * If the page does not exist, you will be prompted to create it. To create it, click on the highlighted link that appears, e.g. WG040. An empty page will appear. * From the master template WG000 under “Edit,” copy and paste the entire template. Once copied into the new issue, SAVE. * The template is divided into sections and the Style Guide will discuss each in detail below. * Each section heading of the template uses Heading Level 2 which is formatted as ==Heading==. ===WG/M&K Issue Information=== Once the issue page has been created and the issue template copied and pasted, the next steps will be to complete the publication information, cover information, editors, listing of the articles and other content. The information below goes into detail for these sections, so please refer to the actual issue to see the example first hand. Note: There are separate and very detailed instructions on completing the ARTICLE template. At this point, the important element is how the article TITLE is created on the ISSUE page, so please pay close attention to these steps. The first part of the index prompts for issue information as illustrated below. The cover image has been uploaded and will populate once you add the issue number as shown. Be sure to update the information with the correct issue number as shown. Over the years, editors have changed and may be a single editor or a group, so list each separately as shown with square . The examples for these sections are illustrated here from WG080 (Issue 80) with Heading Level 2 for each section. ==Whispering Gallery Issue 80 / WG080== * ==Date and Pages== * August 2003, 38 A4 Pages (including Covers) ==Editor== * Valerie Bierman * next name ===Cover Information=== Early covers from M&K were submitted artwork by various contributors. Subsequently, the covers were standardized and later artwork was related to the theme of the issue. To the extent known, attribution should be noted for all artwork. Below are examples from an early M&K issue, an early WG issue and a more current WG issue. The "Cover" section uses a Heading Level 2. ====Marzipan & Kisses (example from MK004)==== A link is created for the name of the artwork with a separate link for the artist. ==Front Cover== * Phillipa and Lymond, Sketch - Gael Scott ==Back Cover== Varies and may be blank or include a sketch * Phillipa Sketch - Jean Clissold ====Early Whispering Gallery issues (example from WG060)==== Typically plain cover with stylized border with no links required. ==Front Cover== * Standard Cover (color) with Border ==Back Cover== * Plain (color) Cover ====Later Whispering Gallery Issues (example from WG135)==== Both front and back covers have attributed artwork related to the main topic of the issue. Inside front and back covers also have artwork or photos that should have attribution. The examples for inside the back cover are from WG149. Provide description and citation but no link required. ==Front Cover== * 'Mary, Queen of Scots and James VI' Credit: Collection at Blair Castle, Perthshire, Scotland ==Back Cover== * 'Tughra' (Official Signature) of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. c. 1555-60 Copyright: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rogers Fund, 1938 ==Inside Front Cover== * Calligraphy by Monica Murray. DK 3.17 - Scene in St Giles as Gabriel and Lymond prepare to fight. ==Inside Back Cover== * Top right: Clasp-reliquary with eagle, Bohemia (?), middle 14th century. 18.5 cm (7.2 in) x 18.5 cm (7.2 in). Musée de Cluny/Musée national du Moyen Âge, Paris. CR.2.15. There is a quote from where this is mentioned in CR and an further explanation of its significance by Deborah Conway Reid * Middle right: Wartime poster on display at the Museum of the Order of St John, Clerkenwell, London. The Grand Priory Church was hit by an incendiary bomb in May 1941, and was restored between 1955 and 1958. * Bottom left: Kate Jewell’s Russian hardback editions of The Lymond Chronicles - she has added the fourth, Queens’ Play Part II, to her collection (see WG146, pp. 21–23). ===Articles=== Issue articles cover a lot of territory, and they may include topical articles on a DD book, fictional or historical characters, historical events, DD events and talks, scholarly presentations and repeating topics of interest. The ISSUE index will establish the list of articles, and these articles will ultimately link to an article page for a summary. One of the main challenges for the ISSUE page is how to enter the title of the article for proper alphabetizing, accurate serialization of a multi-part article, and organization of common issue articles such as the Bookshelf. ====Article Titles==== The title of the article is the first step in indexing the issue. While most are stand-alone articles, several articles are in multiple parts over several issues or may be recurring over several years. These are the steps to follow to establish both the article link and the author link. Again, links are created by the square brackets . =====Single Article===== Enter title and author with separate links: * The Elusive Sir Nicholas Upton - Linda Butcher (WG151) =====Multi-part Articles===== In order to create the link to the full series of articles on one article page, use the square brackets around the primary title for the series. Below are two examples from WG151 indicating the title of the series in square brackets, followed by the number in the series and its title. * More Pollock than Mondrian: Part 2 of 6, Christianity in the First Millennium, A Primer for King Hereafter - Ros Whysall (Salatheel) * Lymond, Robin Stewart and 'That Death Scene': Part 1 of 2, Point of View and Subliminal Persuasion - Carmel Macpherson ==== Titles with Definite or Indefinite Articles (The, A, An)==== In order to properly alphabetize article titles on the WG Articles page, it is necessary to separate "the", "a", and "an" from the beginning of the title. See the example above for The Elusive Sir Nicholas Upton. By separating the definite article "the" from the remainder of the title, it will be alphabetized under "E" and not "T". These examples are from WG131: * The Enigma of Francis Crawford - Scott Richardson * The Dunnett Weekend Edinburgh 2016 - John Saccenti ==== Authors ==== Authors are linked after the title of the article. If multiple authors, each author has a separate link. If no author, indicate 'Unattributed' after hyphen with no square brackets. * Istanbul, City of Two Continents, The Diary of Graham Harper's Harem Part 2 - Betty Cooper and Jean Stringfellow ==== Recurring or Fanfiction Articles ==== There are several articles or topics that reoccur in the most current issues of WG; note that these may or may not be in earlier issues of WG and most likely are not in the MK issues. As of 2017, WG no longer accepts fanfiction submissions; however, there are several fanfiction articles in older WG/MK issues. These fanfiction articles will not be indexed; instead they will be listed on a single page "Fanfiction" with brief summary. Follow these examples: Editorial * Editorial – Valerie Bierman Views from the Wynds * A View from the Wynds - Suzanne McNeill Dunnett Lexicon * A Dunnett Lexicon - Usufruits, Jazerained, Freshets Carole Richardson Talking Point *Talking Point How has your reading of Dunnett's writing taken you into the 'real' world, not away from it?. See letter contributions. Who-Dunnett? * Who-Dunnett? What is meant by 'Oak of linen and pole of Jewels'? (GoK) - Liz Cochrane Letters from Dorothy * A Letter from Dorothy Dunnett to Pat Gorst and later, married, to Pat Wilcox That's Relevant *That’s Relevant! - The Brecbennoch Reliquary, The Golden Rose Deirdre McCormack, The Rota Porphyretica Jo Heaton Fanfiction * Refer to this site for examples: https://dunnettcentral.org/wiki/index.php/Fanfiction. * THE LYMOND CHRONICLES * WG084 - 'Sybilla's Story.' * Lymond and Philippa find the Diary of a deceased Sybilla, written at the time of her marriage. Use the double square brackets around Fanfiction to link the submission to the Fanfiction page. To see the formatting, go to Issue WG085 and look via the Edit function to see the formatting. * Fanfiction 'Crickets' - Kate Hannam Bookshelf * This wiki page lists book suggestions by contributors to 'Whispering Gallery' and Marzipan & Kisses'. Where there is a formal Review attached to the recommendation, a brief summary is included if there is a link to Dorothy Dunnett's works through the characters, places or historical events. These recommendations, thought to be of interest to Dunnett readers, have not been vetted by the Dorothy Dunnett Society. Examples below: * WG083 ** Power and Profit: The Merchant in Medieval Europe. Peter Spufford. (2002) Thames and Hudson. ** Recommendations of fiction on a "feudal" Japan, the War of the Roses, Elizabethan England and Malta. To see formatting, go to Issue WG083 and look via the Edit function to see the formatting.
